Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at admin@blackbayaeration.ca  if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Core Aeration is the process of extracting thumb sized holes in your lawn and depositing the removed material on the surface to break down. This reduces compaction, extends the life of your lawn, and allows fertilizer, water, and oxygen to get to the roots where they are needed most.

1) Fall Aeration (Best for Cool-Season Grass)

  • Why: Prepares for winter, enhances root growth, helps nutrients reach roots, reduces thatch, offers less weed competition, great for overseeding.
  • When: Early to mid-fall, while grass is still growing but before deep dormancy.

2) Spring Aeration (Good for Cool-Season Grass)

  • Why: Wakes grass up, helps it recover from winter, prepares for summer stress.
  • When: Early spring

For Manitoban lawns, the best time to aerate is spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) when grass is growing, ideally when soil is moist but not saturated.

Lawn aeration benefits your yard by relieving compacted soil, allowing crucial air, water, and nutrients to reach grass roots, which promotes deeper root growth, thicker turf, and better resilience against drought, diseases, and heavy foot traffic, making your lawn greener, healthier, and more vibrant. It works by pulling out small plugs of soil, creating channels for essential elements and reducing thatch buildup, which suffocates roots.

Within 30 Days of Lawn Aeration Service Completion the client will receive an invoice with a payment link.  Invoice system is operated by Square Payments and accepts all major credit cards.

  • Water the Lawn: About 1-3 days before, water deeply so the soil is moist enough for the aerator to penetrate but not so wet that it becomes muddy and clogs the machine.
  • Mow Short: Cut your grass to about 2 to 2.5 inches high, bagging the clippings to clear the way for the machine and for potential seeding later.
  • Clear Debris: Rake up leaves, twigs, and other debris to give the aerator unobstructed access to the soil.
  • Mark Obstacles: Use flags or spray paint to mark all sprinkler heads, dog fences, utility lines, or other buried hazards to avoid costly damage.
  • Check Soil Moisture: Use the screwdriver test: if a screwdriver easily goes in, the soil is moist enough; if it's hard to push, water more.
  • Turn Off Irrigation: Shut off your automatic sprinkler system at least 24 hours before the scheduled service.

Billy goat pluGr 18 - a powerful, compact 18-inch walk-behind core lawn aerator,  featuring self-propelling cam-driven tines that pull soil plugs up to 2.75 inches deep for superior aeration, all while being easy to steer and maintain.  The machine can aerate up to 22,000 square feet (approx. 2,000 m²) per hour, driving cores up to 2.75.in

Based on Manitoba soil containing a high clay content Aeration should be performed once each year to maintain healthy turf.

  • Leave the plugs: Don't rake up the soil cores; they naturally decompose, returning nutrients and microbes to the soil, and can break down faster if you mow over them (unless you overseeded).
  • Water deeply: Water immediately and thoroughly to help the plugs dissolve and grass establish, but avoid creating puddles.
  • Fertilize (Optional): Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to feed the lawn.
  • OverOver-seed(Optional): The holes are perfect for new seeds to germinate and fill in bare spots.
